Viewed from the deck of Ryōgoku Bridge (両国橋), elegantly dressed women and children in summer yukata enjoy the evening cool, their colorful figures rendered with Kunisada's characteristic flair and precision. Behind them, the Sumida River stretches wide — its surface crowded with yakatabune (屋形船, roofed pleasure boats) — while the far bank glows with the lights of Edo's summer festivities. ⛩️

The wide triptych format allows Kunisada to capture both the intimate human drama of the foreground figures and the grand panoramic sweep of the river scene — a masterful balance of bijin-ga and meisho-e traditions.

Ryōgoku and Edo's Summer Culture

The area around Ryōgoku Bridge was the heart of Edo's summer entertainment. From 1733, the annual kawabira-ki (川開き, river opening) brought fireworks, food stalls, and pleasure boats to the Sumida River, drawing enormous crowds from across the city.

This tradition lives on today as the Sumida River Fireworks Festival (雅川花火大会), one of Tokyo's most iconic summer events. 🌸

About Utagawa Kunisada

The most commercially successful Ukiyo-e artist of his era, Kunisada was a pupil of Utagawa Toyokuni I and later took the name Toyokuni III. His prolific output spanned actor prints, bijin-ga, landscape series, and genre scenes — always distinguished by bold color, dynamic composition, and an acute sense of contemporary fashion and taste.
