About the Artwork

Created ca. 1838–40 by Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重, 1797–1858), this nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock print) is from the series A Collection of Famous Restaurants of Edo (江戸高名会亭尽 / Edo Kōmei Kaitei Zukushi). It depicts the celebrated Yaozen (八百善) restaurant in San'ya (山谷) — one of the most famous and prestigious dining establishments in Edo. 🌸

Yaozen — Edo's Most Famous Restaurant

Founded in 1717, Yaozen was renowned throughout Edo for its exquisite cuisine and impeccable hospitality. Originally a vegetable shop, it evolved into one of the city's premier dining destinations, celebrated for its refined seasonal menus and elegant presentation. Its reputation was so great that it attracted the patronage of daimyo, scholars, and artists alike — and its name became synonymous with the very finest in Edo culinary culture. 🌲

Yaozen was also famous for its cookbook, Ryori Hayashinan, which brought its recipes to a wider audience and cemented its legendary status in Japanese culinary history. 🌙
