In 1875, the prolific Meiji-period woodblock artist Toyohara Kunichika captured one of the most electrifying figures in Kabuki history: the legendary Ichikawa Danjūrō in the role of Sanjō, from the celebrated series Mitate Suikoden Tōrōdai (Imaginary Portraits of the Shuihuzhuan of Stage). The Artist: Toyohara Kunichika
Active throughout the Meiji period (1835–1900), Toyohara Kunichika was one of the most prolific and celebrated designers of Kabuki actor prints in Japanese history. A student of the great Utagawa Kunisada, Kunichika brought a dramatic intensity and psychological depth to his portraits that set him apart from his contemporaries. His bold compositions, vivid pigments, and mastery of the human form made him the definitive chronicler of the Meiji stage — and his prints of the Ichikawa Danjūrō dynasty are considered among his finest works.
The Subject: Ichikawa Danjūrō as Sanjō
The Ichikawa Danjūrō name is one of the most storied in all of Kabuki — a hereditary title passed down through generations of Japan's greatest actors. In this 1875 print, Kunichika depicts Danjūrō in the role of Sanjō: a fierce, tattooed warrior whose raw physicality and intense gaze leap off the page. The dramatic blue-striped background, the vivid tiger tattoo across his chest, and the bold red accents create a composition of extraordinary visual power.
