About the Work

This print depicts the tradition of yūsuzumi (夕涼み) — the beloved Japanese custom of seeking the cool evening breeze — along the banks of the Shijō Riverbank (四条河原) in Kyoto.

In the foreground, a lively gathering of elegantly dressed men and women enjoy an outdoor banquet, their figures rendered with vivid detail and warmth. Across the river, the scene opens into a sweeping panorama: countless lanterns glow red against the dusk, crowds fill the riverside platforms, and the distant silhouette of the Higashiyama mountains (東山) rises softly against the evening sky — all rendered in Hiroshige's signature ink tones.

The Series: Kyoto Meisho no Uchi

Kyoto Meisho no Uchi is a series of 10 prints in which Hiroshige documented the famous landmarks and seasonal customs of Kyoto. Each print balances meticulous topographical observation with poetic atmosphere, making the series a treasured record of Edo-period Kyoto life.

This print — the Shijō Riverbank evening scene — is among the most evocative in the set, capturing not just a place, but a feeling: the relief of summer heat giving way to a cool, lantern-lit evening shared among friends.
