About the Artwork
This print is one panel from the "Pine" triptych of the series A Modern Water Margin (Tōsei Suikoden / 当世水浸伝), created by the legendary Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞, 1786–1864) in the 7th month of 1854.
The print depicts Kawarazaki Gonjūrō I in the role of Ude no Kisaburō — a Kabuki character likened to Wu Song (Gyōja Bushō), the fearless warrior-monk from the beloved Chinese classic Water Margin (Shuihuzhuan / Suikoden). The sweeping pine silhouette background unifies all three panels of the triptych in elegant harmony. 🌲
The Water Margin Tradition in Ukiyo-e
The Suikoden (Water Margin) was one of the most popular Chinese literary works in Edo-period Japan. Its 108 heroes — outlaws of extraordinary skill and moral courage — captured the Japanese imagination and inspired countless ukiyo-e series. Artists like Kunisada and Kuniyoshi created entire series likening Kabuki actors to these legendary figures, blending theatrical celebrity culture with literary heroism. 🌸
About the Artist: Utagawa Kunisada
Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1864) was one of the most prolific and commercially successful ukiyo-e artists of the 19th century. A master of yakusha-e (actor portraits), he produced thousands of prints depicting the Kabuki stars of his era. His bold compositions, vivid colors, and dynamic figures made him the most popular ukiyo-e artist of his time — a true giant of the Edo period art world. 🎭
