About the Artwork

Created ca. 1838–40 by Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重, 1797–1858), this nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock print) is from the series A Collection of Famous Restaurants of Edo (江戸高名会亭尽 / Edo Kōmei Kaitei Zukushi). It depicts the celebrated Musashiya restaurant and bathhouse in Ushijima (牛島), on the eastern outskirts of Edo. 🌙

Guests relax in yukata (light cotton robes) — possibly having just finished bathing — in a tatami room that opens onto a spacious garden with a tranquil pond. Freshwater fish, the restaurant's specialty, is served on elegant lacquer and blue-and-white porcelain dishes.
