About the Artwork

Created in 1822 by Yanagawa Shigenobu (柳川重信, 1787–1832), this exquisite nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock print) depicts the celebrated courtesan Hanatsuru (花鴶太夫) of the Higashiōgiya brothel, magnificently costumed as Otohime, Princess of the Dragon Palace (龍宮乙姫) — for a summer costume parade (nerimono) held in Osaka's Shinmachi licensed quarter. 🌸

Otohime — The Dragon Princess of Japanese Legend

Otohime is one of the most beloved figures in Japanese mythology, best known as the princess of the undersea Dragon Palace (Ryūgū) in the legend of Urashima Tarō — a young fisherman who is brought to her magical realm beneath the sea. Her costume, featuring dragon motifs and oceanic imagery, was also used in Bugaku court dance performances, giving her a rich presence across Japanese performing arts. 🌊
