About the Artwork

Created in the 7th month of 1854 by Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞, 1786–1864), this nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock print) depicts Ichikawa Ichizō III in the role of Nozarashi Gosuke (野晒語助) — a Kabuki character likened to Shi Jin the Nine Dragoned (Kyūmonryū Shishin / 九紋竜史進), one of the most visually iconic heroes of the Chinese epic Water Margin (Suikoden). 🌲

Shi Jin's legendary nickname — "Nine Dragoned" — comes from his spectacular full-body tattoo of nine dragons, one of the most celebrated tattoo designs in East Asian literary and artistic tradition. This print forms the center panel of the "Pine" triptych from the series A Modern Water Margin (Tōsei Suikoden), unified by the sweeping pine silhouette background. 🐉

This center panel pairs with two companion prints: Nakamura Fukusuke I as Asahina Tōbei (likened to Lu Zhishen the Tattooed Priest) on the left, and Kawarazaki Gonjūrō I as Ude no Kisaburō (likened to Wu Song) on the right.
