About the Artwork

Created in the 2nd month of 1774 by Katsukawa Shunshō (勝川春章, 1726–1792), this nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock print) depicts Ichikawa Ebizō III (三代目市川海老蔵) — who would later be celebrated as Ichikawa Danjūrō IV, one of the most distinguished actors in the history of the Ichikawa family dynasty. 🌸

The Ichikawa family is one of the most celebrated acting dynasties in the history of Kabuki theatre. Founded by Ichikawa Danjūrō I in the late 17th century, the family developed the bold, powerful aragoto (rough-style) acting tradition and the celebrated Kabuki Jūhachiban — the Eighteen Favourite Plays that remain the crown jewels of the Kabuki repertoire. 🔥

The name Ebizō has been one of the most prestigious stage names in the Ichikawa lineage, passed down through generations of distinguished actors. Ichikawa Ebizō III's later adoption of the name Danjūrō IV marked his ascension to the very pinnacle of the Kabuki world. 🌲

Katsukawa Shunshō (1726–1792) transformed the genre of yakusha-e (actor prints) by capturing individual likenesses with unprecedented realism and psychological depth. Before Shunshō, Kabuki actors were depicted with stylized, generic faces; his revolutionary approach made each portrait a true likeness, bringing the stars of the Edo stage to life for audiences across the city. 🎭
