About the Artwork

Created in 1850 by Utagawa Kunimasu (歌川国升, active 1830–52), this nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock print) depicts the superstar Kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon IV in the role of Danshichi Kurobei (団七九郎兵衛) — the fierce, hot-blooded hero of a classic vendetta play, always recognized on stage by his dramatically tattooed body. 🌸

Here, only Danshichi's tattooed arms are exposed, yet the power and presence of the character radiates from every line. The restraint of the composition makes it all the more striking — a masterclass in Osaka ukiyo-e's psychological intensity. 🎭

Born into wealth, he had the rare opportunity to study print design under the great Utagawa Kunisada in Edo, before returning to Osaka where he became a patron and sponsor of ukiyo-e print production. His prints reflect both the technical sophistication of the Edo school and the bold theatrical energy of the Kamigata tradition. 🎭
