Katsukawa Shunshō, Nakamura Sukegoro II (Face of Edo's Outlaw), Ukiyo-e woodblock print

The Face of Edo's Outlaw — Katsukawa Shunshō's Portrait of Nakamura Sukegoro II 🎭

🎭 Today we explore a raw and compelling early masterpiece of Kabuki actor portraiture — a fierce outlaw brought to life by the artist who gave Edo's stage stars their true faces. 🎴

About the Artwork

Created ca. 1771 by Katsukawa Shunshō (勝川春章, 1726–1792), this nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock print) depicts Nakamura Sukegoro II (二代目中村助五郎) in the role of a fierce outlaw — dangerous, defiant, and utterly compelling. 🌸

The print dates from the early years of Shunshō's career, when he was pioneering a revolutionary new approach to actor portraiture that would transform ukiyo-e forever. 🌙

Nakamura Sukegoro II — A Star of the Edo Stage

Nakamura Sukegoro II was a celebrated Kabuki actor of the mid-18th century, known for his powerful performances in both aragoto (rough-style) and dramatic villain roles. His ability to project menace and raw physical presence made him a natural subject for Shunshō's revolutionary new style of portraiture. 🔥

Shunshō's Revolution in Actor Portraiture

Before Katsukawa Shunshō, ukiyo-e actor prints depicted Kabuki stars with stylized, generic faces — beautiful but interchangeable. Shunshō broke with this tradition by capturing the individual physiognomy and psychological presence of each actor, creating portraits that audiences could immediately recognize as specific people. 🌲

This innovation transformed the genre of yakusha-e (actor prints) and established the template for all Kabuki portraiture that followed. Prints like this one — raw, immediate, and psychologically intense — were at the vanguard of that revolution. 🎭

About the Artist: Katsukawa Shunshō
