About the Artwork

Created in 1780 by Katsukawa Shunshō (勝川春章, 1726–1792), this nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock print) depicts Ichikawa Danjūrō V (second from right) and four fellow actors in the scene "Five Chivalrous Commoners" from the play A Soga Drama on the First Festival Day. The actors stand before the entrance to the Chōjiya and Ō-miya houses in the Yoshiwara pleasure district. 🌸

Each actor wears an identical green kimono bearing the emblem of his particular role along the hem and his family crest below the shoulder. Danjūrō V's costume features the character sen under crossed hammers and his famous family crest of three nested squares (mimasu) — one of the most recognizable symbols in all of Kabuki. 🎭

The Otokodate — Edo's Chivalrous Commoners

The otokodate (chivalrous commoners) were fearless street toughs who stood up for ordinary townspeople against the lawless behavior of hatamoto samurai. In Kabuki, they became beloved anti-establishment heroes — symbols of courage, loyalty, and popular justice. Their stories resonated deeply with Edo's merchant and artisan classes, who saw in them a reflection of their own values and aspirations. 🔥

About the Artist: Katsukawa Shunshō

Katsukawa Shunshō (1726–1792) was one of the most influential ukiyo-e artists of the 18th century, celebrated above all for his revolutionary approach to actor portraiture. Before Shunshō, Kabuki actors were depicted with stylized, generic faces; he was among the first to capture their individual likenesses, transforming the genre of yakusha-e (actor prints) forever. 🎭
