When Edo-Period Drama Meets Modern Streetwear
In 1825, the Osaka woodblock artist Shunkōsai Hokushū captured one of the most electrifying moments in Kabuki history: the legendary actor Nakamura Utaemon III in the role of the sword master Kyōgoku Takumi, from the celebrated series Issei ichidai atari Kyōgen (Hits of a Lifetime of Kyōgen). Nearly two centuries later, that same image commands attention on the back of a premium unisex t-shirt — bold, dramatic, and unmistakably Ukiyo-e.
The Artist: Shunkōsai Hokushū
Active between 1808 and 1832, Hokushū was one of the foremost designers of Osaka yakusha-e (actor prints). Where Edo artists like Sharaku favored psychological intensity, Hokushū brought a theatrical grandeur to his compositions — bold outlines, rich pigments, and a commanding sense of presence that made his subjects leap off the page. His portraits of Nakamura Utaemon III are considered among the finest actor prints of the entire Edo period.
The Subject: Nakamura Utaemon III
Nakamura Utaemon III (1778–1838) was one of the greatest Kabuki actors of his era, celebrated for his mastery of both male and female roles. His performances were cultural events — sold-out, talked about, immortalized in woodblock prints that fans collected like trading cards. In this print, he embodies Kyōgoku Takumi with the fierce elegance that made him a legend.
