About the Artwork

Created in the 11th month of 1776 by Katsukawa Shunshō (勝川春章, 1726–1792), this nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock print) depicts Ichikawa Danjūrō V in the role of Hannya no Gorō (般若の五郎) — one of the iconic characters of the celebrated play Shibaraku. 🌸

Danjūrō V is shown in the play's most famous moment: the hero's dramatic entrance in an enormous, boldly patterned costume, striking the iconic mie freeze-frame pose that has defined Shibaraku for centuries. 🎭

Shibaraku — Kabuki's Most Beloved Play

Shibaraku is one of the Kabuki Jūhachiban — the Eighteen Favourite Plays of the Ichikawa family, considered the crown jewels of the Kabuki repertoire. Its premise is irresistibly dramatic: just as innocent victims are about to be executed by a villain, a mighty hero bursts onto the stage with a thunderous cry of "Shibaraku!" ("Stop right there!"), sending the villains fleeing in terror. 🔥

The hero's costume — an enormous kamishimo with exaggerated square shoulders in bold persimmon orange — is one of the most recognizable images in all of Japanese performing arts. The play has been performed continuously since the 17th century and remains a beloved staple of the Kabuki stage today. 🌲
