About the Artwork

Created ca. 1838–40 by Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重, 1797–1858), this nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock print) is from the series A Collection of Famous Restaurants of Edo (江戸高名会亭尽 / Edo Kōmei Kaitei Zukushi). It depicts an upstairs tatami room at the Kawachiya restaurant in Ryōgoku, overlooking the Sumida River. 🌙

The scene captures a shogakai — a cultured social occasion at which renowned painters and calligraphers created works before an audience, who could then purchase their favorite pieces. A young attendant holds up a painting of turtles as a man studies it intently; another guest unrolls an inscribed scroll; a woman grasps a fan decorated with ink-painted bamboo. Pigment dishes, brushes, and a washing basin are arranged on the red floor covering — signs that the creative event is well underway. 🌸

A Living Legacy: Kameseirō at Yanagi-bashi

While the Kawachiya restaurant no longer exists, the spirit of Edo's elegant riverside dining culture lives on nearby. Kameseirō (亠清楼) — a historic restaurant also depicted by Hiroshige in the same series — was founded in the Edo period at Yanagi-bashi and continues to operate at the very same location today, now housed in a modern building. It stands as a remarkable living link to the world Hiroshige painted. ⛩️
